Praise for Fanny
“Chiefly known as an actor (in Lempicka and The Band’s Visit on Broadway), Abud here demonstrates a steady hand as a director. Stage action moves at a quick clip, and the performances are sharp. A bacchanalian interlude in Rome enlivens the proceedings, and is crisply staged. Abud also seamlessly incorporates a potentially tricky narrative device: the ‘Muse’ (Melody Fader), an unacknowledged presence at the family piano playing soft underscoring for most scenes. Dressed all in black, the Muse also exists as a quiet portent of doom; in Abud’s careful blocking, her presence is unobtrusive yet always felt.”

Praise for 3penny
“A final note for George Abud’s wild, pointedly topical remix of The Threepenny Opera, styled as 3Penny Opera, which I caught in a short run, Jan. 15-25, with Off-Brand Opera. Broadway stars Katrina Lenk, Mary Testa, Barbara Walsh, and Abud himself headlined a very eager cast through a properly irreverent raid of Brecht’s script. There’s something to the recipe: Abud’s Groucho affect as Macheath was infectiously acrid, and his general attitude of equal-opportunity effrontery was honestly closer to the bumptious spirit of the original than any Threepenny I’ve ever seen."
— Rob Weinert-Kendt, American Theatre Magazine
“I’ve seen lots of productions of 3Penny— including Raul Julia’s and the National Theatre— plus a lot of other Brecht/Weill, including MAHAGONY and HAPPY END, and this was the most successful and timely and funny. This production should move.”
— Alma Cuervo, Actor
“It was just a thrill to be in the presence of such brilliant artists. Your Macheath is the greatest Macheath I’ve ever seen, including Raul Julia in Richard Foreman’s production, which was astonishing, it blew my mind back in the 70’s. But you had such appeal, such charm, such ferocity, and such generosity. I wish I could come back and see it again because there were certain things, like your scene at the piano with Katrina where I was in such a state of exalted bliss that I almost don’t know what I saw. It was like Berlin cabaret 1929. Which you did throughout the entire production. It’s astonishing, and what an achievement.”
